Nandi Hills is a small but picturesque village located near Mysore. It is the ideal weekend escape for the city’s residents and also one of the prominent destinations to visit in Karnataka. Nandi Hills is also known as Nandi Durga and is popular for its verdant vistas. It is also a renowned historical fortification with a number of temples, monuments, and shrines.
The location was once used as a summer resort by the great monarch, Tipu Sultan. You can explore various relics of the Sultan’s life and legacy in the hill town. His summer home in Nandi Hills can still be located.
Nandi Hills is also home to several well-known temples and shrines, including the Bhoga Nandeeshwara Temple. It is devoted to Lord Shiva and his consort Goddess Parvati as well as his devotee Nandi.
The road trip from Mysore to Nandi Hills will take around 4 hours and 18 minutes long in normal traffic. The distance between Mysore to Nandi Hills is approximately 214 kilometers if you use the National Highway 150A and 75.
Mysore to Nandi Hills Traffic Information
Unless you disregard traffic regulations and safety, a trip to Nandi Hills should be simple and trouble-free. Apart from that, the slopes are fairly steep at 1-2 spots, requiring you to drive carefully. Drive slowly when you enter the hills as the bends are very dangerous.
Along the way, you can stop over at Markonahalli Dam for a picnic. Offer prayers at Sri Yediyur Siddhalingeshwara Temple in Yediyur and Saumyakeshava Temple in Nagamangala. Adventure seekers can enjoy spotting Blackbucks at the Jayamangali Blackbuck Reserve in Tumkur.
There is an alternate route between Mysore and Nandi Hills that can be traveled using National Highway 275 which is only 210 kilometers in length. It takes almost the same time to travel as the first route mentioned and the road trip will take around 4 hours 38 minutes.
Sightseeing places in Nandi Hills
1. Tipu’s Drop
Tipu’s Drop is the place from where convicts were pushed down the steep land end as punishment for their terrible deeds during the era of Tipu Sultan (1750-1799). It is a cliff perched atop a hill at an elevation of 600 meters and offers good views of the surroundings. Tourists may also visit the neighboring Yoga Nandeeshwara Temple, which dates back to the Chola dynasty.
2. Bhoga Nandeeshwara Temple
Nandi Temple, also known as Bhoga Nandeeshwara Temple, is a stunning temple complex dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is located at the foot of the Nandi Hills and is one of the few ancient temples in India that has been beautifully conserved. Nandi Temple is one of the oldest and most revered temples in Karnataka.
3. Tipu’s Summer Residence
The house in which Tipu Sultan lived when he visited Nandi Hills during the summers is known as Tipu’s Summer Residence. This regal palace was started by Haidar Ali and finished by Tipu Sultan. It was used by the royalty as a summer retreat. He also called it the Tashk-e-Jannat, which means “heaven’s envy.”
What to do in Nandi Hills
Nandi Hills is a beautiful weekend retreat from Mysore where you can go cycling or trekking. Watching the sunrise early in the morning is a unique experience since the hills are covered in mist and the trees are dripping with dewdrops.
